SUN TZU

From Sun Tzu, “The Art of War”:

“It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself,

you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles;

if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself,

you will win one and lose one;

if you do not know your enemies nor yourself,

you will be imperiled in every single battle.”

*******

“What is essential in war is Victory, not prolonged operations.”

“Being unconquerable lies with yourself,

being conquerable lies with your enemy.”

“ALL warfare is based on deception.”

“A leader leads by example not by force.”

“You MUST believe in yourself!”

*******

“Victorious warriors win FIRST and then go to war,

while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.”

“When people fall into danger, they are then able to strive for victory.”

*******

“Opportunities multiply as they are seized.”

“The clever combatant imposes his will on the enemy,

but does not allow the enemy’s will to be imposed on him.”

*******

“If your opponent is temperamental,

seek to irritate him.

Pretend to be weak,

that he may grow arrogant.

If he is taking his ease,

give him no rest.

If his forces are united,

separate them.

If sovereign and subject are in accord,

put division between them.

Attack him where he is unprepared,

appear where you are not expected.”

*******

“So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong and to strike at what is weak.”

” To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence;

supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy’s resistance without fighting.”

“Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.”

*******

“Regard your soldiers as your children,

and they will follow you into the deepest valleys;

look on them as your own beloved sons,

and they will stand by you even unto death.”
